 MEMORIAL FUND FOR KNITTERS
The Knitting Guild Association Partners with Helping Hands Foundation, Inc. to Provide Memorials for Knitters
For members of the Knitting Guild Association (TKGA) who have expressed an interest in contributing to a memorial fund for knitters, TKGA and the Helping Hands Foundation, Inc. (HHF) are partnering to provide just such a commemorative opportunity. Friends and relatives can now memorialize a life-long knitter, and anyone who knits or is a part of the knitting industry can contribute to this new fund. Awards from the fund are for TKGA education.
Gifts specified for “The Knitting Guild Association Memorial Fund” must be made payable to “Helping Hands Foundation, Inc." and sent to HHF at 1100-H Brandywine Blvd., Zanesville, OH 43701-7303. HHF will serve as a repository for the fund. Donors should specify that their gifts are for “The Knitting Guild Association Memorial Fund” and should identify the name of the knitter to be memorialized. All gifts are tax deductible under the 501(c)3 non-profit Helping Hands Foundation, the umbrella organization for Needle Arts Mentoring Programs(SM) across the country. Donors can learn more about the two partnering organizations online by visiting www.TKGA.com and www.NeedleArtsMentoring.org.
The first memorial gifts to the fund were given in remembrance of Virginia Dillon and Marjorie Hughes. Gini and Marge were very early members of TKGA – with member numbers of 660 and 239, respectively. TKGA now has approximately 12,000 members. As the donor of both memorial gifts, Marlyn W. Ibele, a knitting designer, recalls her friends: “I met Gini at the first TKGA Convention in Dallas, Texas. I was looking for a place to sit for dinner, and the only empty seat I could see was at her table. Of course, she invited me to join her. We became instant friends… Gini was very creative with her knitting. Many years ago packages were tied with string, rather than tape. She saved that string – I remember seeing a huge ball one time when I visited her… She knit curtains for her dining room with that string. There was an article and picture of her curtains in Cast On in [the] early years… Until a year or two before her death she taught at a knitting/needlework shop. She had a rather unconventional way of knitting, but her students loved her.
“Marjorie Hughes was a… faithful member of TKGA until recent years when her eyes gave out and she could no longer see to read. She could still knit by ‘feel’ until just a few months ago… Marge was a very good friend of Gini’s. They had birthdays just 3 weeks apart and were the same age (88). The two of them plus me and two others attended many Conventions together… Marge was a charter member of the Western Reserve Knitting Guild [Canfield, OH] – the very first TKGA local knitting guild.”
